Celebrating Scotland's voters
by Ed Sawicki - September 2014
The Scottish Independence referendum took place on September 18, 2014. Scotland has shown us how democracy is supposed to work. About 97 percent of the population registered to vote. Little or no voter suppression. No news reporting of results while the voting was still going on.
In the weeks leading up to the election, interviews of voters on NPR and the BBC showed both sides having reasonable arguments for voting one way or the other. No wingnut claims of anchor babies, FEMA concentration camps, the United Nations taking our guns, manic fear of socialism, Stand Your Ground, health care death panels, Putin worship, attacks on religion, attacks by the religious, attacks on unions, fear of women, Pope Francis-haters, etc. - the usual crap we find in U.S. politics.
Compared to the United States, Scotland is a model of democracy. I salute you Scotland.
