Population map

by Ed Sawicki

There are numerous maps of the United States that highlight states with red or blue to indicate the state's political leanings. This often gives the false impression that most of the country is Republican. But that's not true. Large swaths of the country are rural, where animals outnumber humans by orders of magnitude.

This map is an attempt to show the populations of the states using colored circles. The diameter of the circles show the relative size of the population.

The colors of the circles were determined by recent elections, including the 2024 presidential election. But given the turmoil in the United States in 2026, this map will change. When ICE murdered two White Americans, and explained that one of the killings was because "He had a gun." (but didn't have the gun in his hand), many red states are expected to turn purple, and some blue.
